The device includes a parallel-sided channel (14) along which the token or coin descends. A pivoting flap (17A) forms a section of the base of the channel and either allows the token or coin to pass down the channel or pivots away so it drops into an alternative position. The flap may open under the weight of the token or coin or may alternatively be held in the closed position. A piezoelectric element (1), which may be a bimorph plate, is mounted beneath the flap and blocks the flap when it is in a first position and allows the flap to open in a second position.
