A parallel local area network server is constituted by a massively parallel computer (17) having processing nodes (15) equipped with mass storage devices (14), local area network interfaces (18) and cache memories. The system provides the functions of a file server and a local area network switch, eliminating the performance limitation associated with overload of connection between a file server and a LAN switch in conventional local area networks. The system is used to serve requests for specific data from the shared file system, and to carry messages between workstations (13).
