Alteromonas infernus strain is a Gram-negative bacterium that has dimensions of 0.6-0.8 by 1.4-2 mu m, moves by means of a polar flagellum, is an encapsulated, non-pigmented, non-luminescent bacterium, is a non-fermentative obligate anaerobe that expresses catalase and cytochrome oxidase, is non-denitrifying, does not accumulate poly- beta -hydroxybutyrate, and can grow on any of glycerol, D-xylose, galactose, glucose, fructose, mannitol, cellobiose, maltose, lactose, melibiose, sucrose, starch, gentobiose, D-turanose and gluconate as sole carbon source. Its DNA has a G+C content of 48.1% and has 52% homology with the DNA of A. macleodii subsp. macleodii and 33% homology with the DNA of A. macleodii subsp. fijiensis. Also claimed is a polysaccharide that can be obtained by ethanol precipitation from culture supernatants of the new strain.
