Benzotriazole-based UV absorbers and photographic elements containing them

A photographic element comprises an ultraviolet absorbing compound of formula (I); (where R4 = (un)substituted alkyl group; R4 may be further joined to either L or A* forming a ring and the benzo or phenyl ring may be further (un)substituted; L = bivalent linking group; p = 0 or 1; and A* = alkyl group having asymmetric-carbon or -silicon atom. The ultraviolet absorbing compound (I) is a mixture of two enantiomers about the asymmetric carbon or silicon atom. Preferably the ultraviolet absorbing compound is a 60/40 - 40/60 mixture of two enantiomers. The element additionally comprises light sensitive silver halide emulsion layer(s) and a non-light sensitive layer. The ultraviolet absorbing compound is located in the non-light sensitive layer preferably located above all light sensitive layers. The photographic element additionally comprises a reflective support and silver halide emulsion layer(s). Alternatively, the ultraviolet absorbing compound is located in the silver halide emulsion layer or in a layer positioned further from the support than the silver halide emulsion layer. The photographic element additionally preferably comprises a fluorescent brightener preferably absorbing ultraviolet in the 350 - 410 nm range in order to fluoresce at 400 - 500 nm. The ultraviolet absorbing compound is present in an amount of 0.2 - 10 g/m2. Alternatively, the ultraviolet absorbing compound (I) is a 50/50 mixture of two enantiomers.
