PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve coupling efficiency at the time of coupling a single mode optical fiber to a semiconductor light source which is a light emitting or receiving element, etc., by flatly forming the end face of this single mode optical fiber, projecting only the core part thereof, pressing buff to the front end of the core from the opposite side of a coaxial direction and polishing the end face. SOLUTION: After the end face of the single mode optical fiber 2 is cut smooth, its end is treated by chemical etching. Only the core part 6 is projected from the flat clad surface 4 by this treatment and, further, the buff is pressed to the front end of the core from the opposite side of the coaxial direction. The front end of the core is then subjected to front spheroidizing working in such a manner that the front end of the core is formed into a spherical surface shape. Only the core part 6 is projected when the end of the single mode optical fiber 2 is immersed perpendicularly into an etching soln., such as aq. hydrofluoric acid soln. contg. ammonium fluoride, etc., and is held for a long period of time in this state. Further, the front end of the core is polished to have a spherical surface shape when the buff is pressed to the front end of the core from the opposite side in the coaxial direction. |
