The mixer comprises a hemispherical mixing bowl with top loading and bottom unloading connections and a mixing element comprising a spring, the ends of which are connected by collars to vertical shafts. In operation, the mixing element generates a large number of counter-current streams of the material in the mixing bowl, thereby ensuring efficient mixing. As the components of the mix are fed into the mixing bowl, the two shafts are rotated in opposite directions. The turns of the spring may have an elliptical or a polygonal profile.
