The hand-held unit (1) has two ultrasonic sensors (2) connected by cables (2) to the transmitter and receiver respectively. The time interval for the ultrasonic signal travelling from one sensor to the other depends on the density of the liquid under test. The signal detected by the receiver is processed and shown on the display (4) as a percentage deviation from the nominal value of liquid density.The density deviation from the required value may be signalled by a optical or audible means without the use of a display. The unit may be installed permanently, rather than hand-held.
