A process for the preparation of dicarboxylic acid monoesters or alkali metal salts thereof by conducting the transesterification of a dicarboxylic acid monoester or an alkali metal salt thereof with a metal alkoxide in the presence of an organic solvent; and another process for the preparation of dicarboxylic acid monoesters or alkali metal salts thereof by conducting the transesterification of a dicarboxylic acid monoester or an alkali metal salt thereof with an alcohol in the presence of a metal alkoxide. The processes make it possible to prepare various dicarboxylic acid monoesters at high selectivity, and have the effect that when an optically active ester having an asymmetric center at the alpha -position in the carboxylic moiety is used as the starting compound, the optical purity is scarcely lowered by the reaction.
