The radiation reflected back from the section of track is detected with positional resolution. An evaluation unit (12) determines the position and/or the type of the track branch points from the position resolved data in the detected radiation. A cylindrical lens can be arranged after each transmitter to produce a transmission beam in a transmission plane.
