PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a diaryl carbonate useful as a raw material for producing polycarbonate in good yield by heating a diaryl oxalate in the presence of a specific catalyst in decarbonylation reaction of the diaryl oxalate. SOLUTION: The decarbonylation reaction of a diaryl oxalate is carried out normally at 100-450 deg.C, especially 180-350 deg.C by using a carboxylic acid salt of an alkali metal as a catalyst. An aliphatic carboxylic acid salt of the alkali metal is preferably used as the carboxylic acid salt of the alkali metal. Lithium formate, sodium formate, lithium acetate, potassium acetate, rubidium oxalate, etc., is exemplified as the catalyst. The carboxylic acid salt of the alkali metal may be supported on a support such as silica or zeolite. The supported amount is about 0.1-50wt.% as the alkali metal, based on the support. The catalyst is normally used in an amount of about 0.001-50mol% as the alkali metal, based on diaryl oxide. |
