The digital and analog image recording/reproducing device is provided with a digital recording/reproducing head and an analog recording/reproducing head in a head drum so as to switch and signal-process a digital signal and an analog signal to the respective recording and reproducing processing unit and so as to record and reproduce the digital signal and the analog signal, and controls a run of a tape and a rotation of the head drum at a proper rate to each signal processing unit, thereby selectively recording and reproducing an HDTV digital signal and a VHS analog signal to a VHS tape, and ensures an existing VHS and a compatibility, and automatically decides a reproducing mode to automatically control a digital reproduction or an analog reproduction.
