The invention relates to an advanced electronic power regulator for regulating the AC power fed in a load. The power regulator comprises a switching unit (1) and a control unit (2); the switching unit (1) is connected in series with the load (3) and it is controlled so that the desired power can be fed in the load. According to the invention, the switching unit (1) comprises two parallelly connected semiconductor switching units (5, 6), the first of which is a transistor switching unit (5) and the second a thyristor switching unit (6); and the control unit (2) comprises a synchronising unit (7) and a regulating unit (8), by means of which synchronising unit (7) there is observed at least the input voltage (U), such as the network voltage, prevailing over the load (3) and the switching unit (1), and information is obtained at least of the input voltage zero points; and by means of the regulating unit (8), the first and second semiconductor switching units (5, 6) are set to conducting state on the basis of the information received from the synchronising unit (7), so that first the transistor switching unit (5) is set to conducting state, and then the thyristor switching unit (6), repeatedly at a desired point of time at the zero point of the input voltage (U), and that the semiconductor switching units (5, 6) are set to cut-off state essentially at the load current zero point, so that the transistor switching unit (5) is first switched to cut-off state, and that the thyristor switching unit (6) is switched to cut-off state thereafter.
