The invention provides a process for producing cephachloro monohydrate, a beta-lactam derivative, represented by the formula (I). The process comprises the steps of: obtaining the compound (II) from D(-)phenylglycine; converting the compound (II) to the compound (III) by reacting an acid chloride or an acid anhydride at pH 6.0-8.0 without filtrating, washing and drying the compound (II); reacting 7-amino-3-chlorocephalosporanic acid with the compound (III) in the presence of 2-ethylhexanoic acid, a catalyst, to produce cephachloro monohydrate.
