Storage system for items for retail

The storage system has a number of racks divided into compartments into which are loaded items for storage. The items are loaded onto support bases which are extracted with the items by a robotic transfer system. This has a gantry (14) with a vertical support to move the transfer heads (30) between the compartments and the access station. The selected items are brought to access points and returned items are placed into loading points for the transfer system to move them to the correct positions. The computer control can be operated by a hand held terminal. This allows different sales personnel to access the items. Part of the store can be designed for manual access.
