PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent to a focus servo operation and a tacking servo operation from being affected by turning ON a skew servo when the absolute value of a radial skew error signal is smaller than a set signal. SOLUTION: When a skew servo is OFF, the information surface of an optical disk D is not vertical to the optical axis of an objective lens 2 and a radial skew error signal Ers takes a large value with respect to an angleθ. Radial skew searching is started from this condition and the operation is placed on standby while the absolute value of the signal Ers is equal to or larger than a set signal Ersε. Then, when the absolute value is smaller than the set signal ERSε, the skew servo is turned ON. Thus, the information surface of the optical disk D and the optical axis of the objective lens 2 are set vertical to each other. By turning ON the skew servo when the absolute value of the signal Ers is smaller than the set signal Ersεand made stable, a focus servo operation and a tracing servo operation are prevented from being adversely affected.
