The specification relates to transferring liquid from a drum utilising compressed air. Disclosed is an apparatus for regulating the pressure of the air within the drum below a predetermined limit. The apparatus comprises an adaptor (50) for connection to the plughole of the drum by threaded connection (54), the adaptor comprising a chamber (52) communicating with a source of compressed air through a passage (55) and with the drum through a passage (53). The chamber (52) houses a device (70) having a passage (74) providing a convergent zone (75) communicating with the compressed air through apertures (76) and directing flow of compressed air into the drum through passage (53). The convergent zone may alternatively be provided by an external convergent surface at one end of an elongate, bored member located in the chamber cooperating with a corresponding internal surface in the adaptor. The convergent zone is constructed to permit the pressure of the air in passage (53) to reach a predetermined limit, increases in pressure through passage (55) being released through passage (74). A noise control and safety apparatus (57) through which the excess air may pass may be fitted to the adaptor by threaded connection (56, 59). This apparatus comprises a gauze and a flame retardant material providing a safety mechanism in the event that fluid ignites in chamber (52). The device (70) can be inverted in the adaptor (50) to change the device and adaptor from a pressure mechanism to a suction mechanism. A ball valve concept allowing the device to be rotated to convert its operation is disclosed.
