The measuring head (1) has a probe (7) inserted in the engine cylinder bore (2) with at least one measuring system for determining the surface roughness. The probe has a centring device for positioning the probe coaxial to the bore and a guide (6) relative to which the probe is displaced in the axial direction, fitted to the engine block (3) via an alignment device (13), so that the axial displacement of the probe is parallel to the bore axis.
