<p>A method and system (31) for providing intelligent protection against access line failures in a telecommunications system (11). The system (31) detects a line fault on a first access line (27) at a customer premises equipment (13) and sends a query to a network management system (21) of a data transport network (17) to determine the origin of the line fault.
