PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ammonia decomposition catalyst capable of efficiently decomposing ammonia at a relatively low temp. and capable of efficiently producing a gaseous hydrogen-nitrogen mixture by carrying Ru and an alkali metal on a carrier and specifying the halogen content of the resultant catalyst. SOLUTION: A gaseous hydrogen-nitrogen mixture having a ratio of 3:1 used as atmospheric gas in a process for bright-annealing stainless steel or nickel, a process for brazing stainless steel, etc., is produced at a low cost by decomposing amonia with an ammonia decomposition catalyst obtd. by carrying Ru and an alkali metal on a carrier and regulating the halogen content of the resultant catalyst to⊖100wt.ppm. The alkali metal is preferably at least one of Na, K, Rb and Cs. The pref. Ru and alkali metal contents of the catalyst are preferably 0.1-5wt.% and 1-30wt.%, respectively.
