<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyester having a good transparency and hue and being suitable for hollow containers by using an antimony compound as a polycondensation catalyst. SOLUTION: This invention provides a process for producing a polyester by the esterification and melt polycondensation of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and an alkylene glycol, which comprises adding 1×10<-4> to 2×10<-3> mol, per mol of the acid component, of phosphoric acid and 1-20wt.%, based on the phosphoric acid, disphosphorus pentaoxide to the reaction system in the esterification of the aromatic dicarboxylic acid with the alkylene glycol, subjecting the entire mixture to esterification, adding a polycondensation catalyst comprising polyester-soluble antimony compound to the reaction system, and subjecting the entire mixture to melt polycondensation. Further, solid state polymerization is performed after the melt polycondensation.</p> |
