The device has a roller conveyor (9) for the support of the workpieces (3-5) and the roller conveyor can be moved in controllable fashion in a vertical plane. The periphery of the workpiece always adopts the same distance from the head (2) where the laser beam is generated. The conveyor has side walls (7) to create a feed or discharge chamber for the workpieces. In actual fact there are three of these conveyors arranged in a star and which can rotate about a common centre. Each conveyor has feelers with contact balls.
