The information system consists of an information beacon (10) that exchanges data with a user module. The beacon has a controller (20) that connects with a transmitter (28) that outputs information from a memory (26) and a stored program (24). The system is powered from a battery (16) that is solar energy rechargeable (12). The user has a module that receives, stores and outputs data in an acoustic form. Further, the beacon includes a trigger which upon transmission request initiates control of a message. The module also has a generator which produces a notification signal to the user.
