The steering action on a road vehicle depends upon the measured 6 forward speed of the vehicle and the user applied actuation force. A control lever 1 has a force sensor 4 that is coupled to a stage 5 that sets the demand steering angle position and a controller 7 operates a rack and pinon drive 8 coupled to the road wheels 10. A hydraulic actuator system 13,15 provides feedback to the input lever.
