The manhole cover (1) has a top surface which is flush with the surface of the roadway. The flat lid may have a frame (2) which has a stepped profile, with a larger diameter at its top edge than at its bottom edge. The stepped outer surface of the frame ring rests on the corresponding stepped surface of a concrete ring (3). The manhole cover and the frame may be made of cast iron. This concrete ring is embedded in the asphalt (7) making up the road surface and rests on a rectangular-section support ring (8) with notches in its top corners. This ring rests on the top edge of the shaft (4).
