A process for preparing an esterification product is disclosed. the process comprises providing a polyfunctional organic acid or anhydride, a cyclic organic carbonate compound, and a catalyst selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal, an alcohol derived salt of the alkali metal, and mixtures thereof, and reacting the polyfunctional organic acid or anhydride and the cyclic organic carbonate compound in the presence of the catalyst to form the esterification product. This product can be further reacted with carboxylic acids or their anhydrides and optionally an hydroxy compound to prepare a polyester. Unsaturated polyester resins produced by this process are also described.
