PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent blade edge chipping or the chipping of a bottom corner of a material to be cut from occurring when a hard material such as stone is cut. SOLUTION: This cutting method for a hard material is to engage an endless wire saw 11 across a drive pulley 12 and a tension pulley 13 and press the wire saw 11 into contact with a hard material to be cut 37 while the wire saw 11 is driven to rotate to cut the material 37. In the case, the cutting process is performed by setting an angle of inclinationθin such a manner that the wire saw 11 on the cutting side relatively forms an angle of elevation toward the rotary direction of the wire saw 11 between the wire saw 11 on the cutting side and the bottom face of the material 37. Further, the feed of the wire saw 11 in the direction in which the wire saw 11 is pressed into contact with the material 37 is stopped or the feed rate of the wire saw 11 is lowered, under such a state that a part which remains uncut of a wedge-like cross section is formed at an angle complying with the angle of inclinationθon the bottom side of the direction in which the wire saw 11 for the material 37 is driven, right before the completion of cutting the material 37. Finally, the cutting of the part which remains uncut is completed under the state that the feed of the wire saw 11 is stopped or its feed rate is lowered.
