PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device which can treat eggs in a larger amount and at a higher speed than those of a conventional single row conveyer method, when the eggs or the like are subjected to a separation treatment, and to provide a method for controlling the device. SOLUTION: This method for separating the eggs, comprising transferring the eggs from plural row conveyers FC for supplying and measuring the eggs to plural row conveyers 10 in a state that the row orders and longitudinal orders of the eggs are maintained as such, while downward directing the sharp edges of the eggs, conveying the eggs in the downward directed postures, overpassing the conveyers 10 above a plurality of pre-packaging conveyers 11, and then releasing the corresponding eggs from the conveyers 10 to the pre-packaging conveyers 11 at the interchanged portions 12 of the target packaging places PS. Therein, the eggs can be controlled so that the lines and the rows do not compete each other at the interchanged portions 12 on the pre-packaging conveyers 11, by a selection method comprising monitoring the states of the packaging places, selecting candidate eggs from the egg group placed in the selection area, collating the selected eggs with conditions, and then gathering the selected eggs at a packaging plate PS requiring the selected egg.
