Nutritive substances are supplied to dextran-generating micro-organisms and the resulting slimy mass is dried to produce solid particles useful as packaging media, as soil improvement materials, as foodstuffs and feedstuffs, as bedding for livestock, as stationary phase for chromatography and as drying medium. The particles are rendered particularly porous by freeze-drying or by the admixture of foaming agents.
