According to the invention there is provided a power steering device which has a hydraulic actuator (18), which generates steering assistance power by using hydraulic fluid fed from a pump (37) driven by an electric motor (50), and means (60) for controlling the rotation speed of the motor (50) so that the rotation speed is set to a preset steering assistance speed at a steering assistance mode and set to a preset standby speed at a steering assistance release mode. A brushless motor is used as the motor (50).
