PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a colorless new cyclopentyl derivative having high chemical stability and high stability to electric to electric field and magnetic field and having mutual solubility and good solubility to other liquid crystal materials. SOLUTION: This cyclopentyl compound is represented by the formula [(k) is an integer of 4-18; (n) is 0 or 1; Y<1> and Y<2> are each a single bond, 0, COO or OOC; ring A to ring C are each independently mono or di-fluorinated 1,4- phenylene, pyrimidine-2, 5-diyl, pyridin-2,5-diyl, naphthalene-2,6-diyl, etc.; Z<1> is a single bond, COO, C≡C, etc.; Z<2> is COO, OCH2 , etc.; R is a straight-chain or a branched (optically active) 4-20C alkyl or alkenyl], e.g. 5-heptyl-2-[4-(8- cyclopentyloctylox)-phenyl]-pyridine. The compound of the formula is obtained by a well-known method from a compound carrying H instead of terminal cyclopentane ring.
