PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing methacrolein in high selectivity by utilizing a catalyst when methacrolein and methacrylic acid are produced from metharyl alcohol. SOLUTION: When producing methacrolein and methacrylic acid by carrying out vapor phase catalytic oxidation of metharyl alcohol with molecular oxygen, a catalyst represented by the formula Pa Mob Vc Xd Ye Zf Og [X is one or more kinds of elements selected from antimony, bismuth, germanium, arsenic, zirconium, tellurium, silver and boron; Y is one or more kinds of elements selected from iron, cobalt, zinc, chromium, magnesium, copper, manganese, cerium and lanthanum; Z is one or more kinds of elements selected from potassium, rubidium, cesium and thallium; (a), (b), (c), (d), (e), (f) and (g) represent each an atomic ratio of each element, and when (b) is 12, 0.5<=(a)<=3, 0<=(c)<=3, 0<=(d)<=3, 0<=(e)<=3 and 0<=(f)<=3 are satisfied and (g) is oxygen number satisfying valence of each component] is used. |
