Stuffing-box packing shaft seal

The packing comprises one or more rings of woven fibres, impregnated for heat-resistance and choked with anorganic additives, embedded in a filling mixture containing elastomer ingredients. Each ring is enclosed by a cover (21) of woven metal fibres, typically of 6 to 10 microns diameter. Graphite fibres and/or non-metallic ones resistant to high temperature can be inserted between the metal ones, and the cover can be externally coated with a lubricant, typically boron nitride. Metal foil can be inserted between adjacent rings in the packing, and the metal fibres can be of X2CrNiMo 17-13-12 or X2CrNiMo 18-14-3.
