A capacitance sensor (1a) having high detecting accuracy and high sensitivity irrespective of the size of a detecting electrode (3) is constituted of a capacitive detecting element (2), a circuit board (6) mounted with a detection circuit, and a power source section (7). The element (2) is composed of the detecting electrode (3), a charged plate (4), and a ground electrode (5). The charged plate (4) is positioned between the detecting electrode (3) and the ground electrode (5), and the electrode (3), the plate (4), and the electrode (5) are arranged in a state where they are insulated from each other. In addition, the electrode (3), the plate (4), and the electrode (5) are supported by an insulating material (supporting member) not shown in the figure at their end sections. The circuit board (6) is put on the surface (32) of the detecting electrode (3) and insulated from the charged plate (4).
