An improved undertread measuring apparatus includes a lift cylinder attached to a support structure which raises and lowers sensors that sense the undertread thickness. The sensors are rotatably connected to a rod such that they rotate out of the way if impacted and automatically realigned. The sensors are also sequenced first one sensor then the other sensor is brought into proper position. As the sensors come into contact with a tire casing which may rotate, two rollers maintain the sensors in alignment.
