The system comprises a re-usable support (1) which can be compacted or deployed. The support has a rigid base (3) and rigid lateral components (7) which can be folded down. There is also a rigid cover (12) which can be fixed on the lateral components in the support deployed position and can be directly placed on the base in the compacted position. Fixings (8,11) and/or articulations (9,10) connecting the lateral components to the base are located outside the plane of the base (36) in the deployed position. The useful height of the deployed support is greater than the base length. The base has fixed rigid lateral parts (4) projecting from it which support the lateral components in the deployed position. The base and the cover have lateral holes (13) enabling passage of the forks of a fork lift truck.
