A cyclic phenol sulfide containing at least one sulfinyl or sulfonyl group and represented by general formula (1), wherein X represents a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group, or an acyl group; Y represents a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group, a halogenated hydrocarbon group, -COR<1>, -OR<2>, -COOR<3>, -CN, -CONH2, -NO2, -NR<4>R<5>, a halogen atom, -SO4R<6> or -SO3R<7>; R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, R<4>, R<5>, R<6>, and R<7> represent each a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group; Z represents a group selected from the group consisting of S, a sulfinyl group, and a sulfonyl group; and n is an integer of 4 to 12, provided that a plurality of Xs or Ys may be the same or different and at least one Z of a plurality of Zs represents a sulfinyl or sulfonyl group.
