PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably prevent a fall of the number of revolutions during idling even during the increase of a load due to other cause than operation of auxiliary machines, such as variation of an environment condition and a trouble of a transmission. SOLUTION: In a cylinder injection type internal combustion engine having an output control means 70 constituted such that fuel is injected directly in a combustion chamber 5, premixture combustion and layer-form combustion are switched from each other according to an operation state, during idling, layer-form combustion is carried out, and a fuel amount is increased with the increase of an external load, and the output of an engine 1 is varied to the increase side, it is discriminated whether a fuel amount or a parameter related to the fuel amount exceeds a given value during idling, and when it exceeds the given value, conversion to premixture combustion is effected to prevent a fall the number of revolutions of an engine and prevents the occurrence of an engine stall.
