PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject filler useful as a filler for a polymerizable material, excellent in frictional strength, providing a synthetic substance low in polymerization shrinkage, comprising a porous silicon dioxide glass and imparting the filler with specific physical properties. SOLUTION: This filler is composed of a porous silicon dioxide glass having 0.5-20μm particle size, 90-100nm pore dimension, 800-900mm<3> /g pore volume and 20-40m<2> /g BET surface area and is made to have 0.5-50μm particle size, 20-120nm pore dimension, 200-1000mm<3> /g pore volume and 10-100m<2> /g BET surface area. The porous silicon dioxide glass is preferably subjected to silane treatment with 3-methacryloyloxypropylmethoxysilane. The porous silicon dioxide glass is preferably impregnated with a material containing a (meth)acrylic acid ester monomer (e.g. tetraacryloyloxyisopropoxypentaerythritol).
