An in-line roller skate apparatus is provided having a boot assembly (12) and a wheel support assembly (14) attached to the sole of the boot assembly. The wheel support assembly is characterized by a generally inverted U-shaped bracket portion (14) having a rear wheel assembly (34) at a first or rear end, a front wheel assembly (36) at a second or front end, and an intermediate portion extending axially therebetween and having spaced mounting apertures for receiving second (30) and third wheel (32) assemblies positioned substantially evenly between the front and rear assemblies. The rear wheel assembly includes first and second wheels (40) and a removable mounting spindle assembly (42) for attaching the first and second wheels to the first end of the support bracket in a spaced side-by-side configuration. A conversion kit of separate parts is also provided comprising at least one additional wheel and three wheel mounting spindle assemblies (56). In use, the rear wheel assembly optionally is removed from the support bracket and individual wheels are mounted by their respective single wheel mounting spindles in the first through fourth wheel positions to convert the in-line skate from a "training configuration" comprising a dual wheel assembly at the rear and a single wheel assembly at the front of the support bracket, to a "regular use configuration" comprising four spaced single wheels mounted axially on the support bracket. |
