Editing a computational tree program written in a computational tree programming language includes accessing text data corresponding to the computational tree program, selecting a portion of the text data, parsing the portion of text data, providing the statement type and parameters to a user interface, and updating the text data with the new text portion if the user makes modifications. The user interface may include a dialog box in a window on the video display. The user may move a cursor and selects items in the dialog box. The user may be provided with a pull-down menu.
