A liquid crystal display includes a substrate 103; a transistor 108 over the substrate, the transistor 108 having a gate 117a, a source 115a, and a drain 115b; a passivation layer 126 over the transistor 108; a light shielding layer 110 over a portion of the passivation layer 126 over the transistor 108; a planarization layer 156 over the light shielding layer 110 and the passivation layer 126, the planarization layer 156 having a contact hole over one of the source 115a and the drain 115b; a pixel electrode 104 over the planarization layer 156, the pixel electrode 104 being connected to the one of the source 115a and the drain 115b through the contact hole; and an alignment layer 111 over the pixel electrode 104. In an alternative embodiment the pixel electrode 104 is formed under the passivation layer 126.
