A PWM driver controls current in a resistive or inductive load 60 on the basis of peak current level sensors 46,56. A programmable target current value is supplied which is fixed for a unit amount of time for comparison with the sensed current, and with minimal filtering or phase lag, a controller 30 can utilise the output current at its peak, up to the design limits of the circuit components. Starting at a zero current level, the controller can be given an immediate full scale command by a microprocessor 20, thereby simplifying the control signal which must be provided to the PWM driver in start up situations. The controller 30 also detects and responds to faults such as shorts and open circuits.
