<p>An internal combustion engine (10) having a cylindrical outer case (12) defining base with compression cylinders (39) and power cylinders (36) circumferentially spaced in the engine (10), and housing opposing intake (38) and exhaust pistons (40). Inlet ports (80) for supplying pressurized air to the pistons include a small percentage of the base compression air stored in accumulators (70, 72) at a pressure that is the highest pressure in the engine. Flex tubes (100) judiciously mounted in the pistons (38, 40) and attached at either end to the piston (38, 40) and piston ring (90) for supplying air from the accumulator to a plurality of pockets (88) formed in the piston ring (90) to hydrostatically support the pistons (38, 40) and rings (90). The pistons (38, 40) power rotary cams (46, 48) mounted on opposing ends (16, 18) of the engine and a cam follower system (60, 62, 64, 66) positions the pistons (38, 40) for the 2-cycle operation. A four bar linkage system (120, 122) is operatively connected to the piston rod (56, 58) to minimize piston side loads.</p> |
