A continuous process for the production of elemental magnesium (9-1) is described. Magnesium (9-1) is made from magnesium oxide (5) and a light hydrocarbon gas (6). In the process, a feed stream (7) of the magnesium oxide (5) and a gas (6) is continuously fed into a reaction zone in main reactor chamber (4). There the magnesium oxide (5) and gas (6) are reacted at a temperature of 1400 DEG C or greater in the reaction zone to provide a continuous product stream (12) of reaction products, which include elemental magnesium (9-1). The product stream (12) is continuously quenched in the products separation chamber (9) after leaving the reaction zone, and elemental magnesium (9-1) is separated from other reaction products (9-2).
