PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a columnar clay catalyst enabling to selectively hydroconvert a fed waxy raw material into a desired distillate product by treating the fed waxy raw material in the presence of a specific columnar clay-carrying metal catalyst by a mild hydroconversion method. SOLUTION: (A) A fed waxy raw material partially or wholly having a boiling point of >700 deg.F is brought into contact with (B) a catalyst produced by carrying a metal belonging to the group VIII, VI or IB in the periodic table (preferably platinum or palladium) on a columnar clay (e.g. a clay having a gallery height of 6-14Å), a surface area of 100-400m<2> /g and a micropore volume of 0.05-2.0ml/g) under hydroconversion states [e.g. temperature: 500-700 deg.F, pressure: 30-70 atmospheric pressure, hydrogen-added amount: 1000-5000SCF/B (fed raw material), and space velocity: 0.5-2LHSV].
