The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a small mat for animals on the basis of a substantially non-absorbent elastomeric material, which comprises the formation of the mat from a material when in the molten or ductile state and applying an antimicrobial agent to the material so that the antimicrobial agent is substantially trapped between the elastomeric chains of the material so that the antimicrobial agent is transferred to the surface layers of the mat or layers juxtaposed with the surface layers.
