Thiophene derivatives of formula (I), their optically active enantiomers and their basic addition salts, are new. Ar1, Ar2 = phenyl optionally substituted by 1-5 of halo, 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy, OH, CF3 or methyl sulphonyl, such that one of Ar1 and Ar2 always carries a methylsulphonyl group; A = 1-5C straight hydrocarbon chain optionally mono- or di-substituted by 1-6C alkyl; and R = H, 3-6C cycloalkyl, or 1-6C alkyl optionally substituted by 3-6C cycloalkyl or aryl which are each optionally substituted by one or more of halo, 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy, OH or CF3.
