Environment-friendly incineration of rubbish

The incinerator (10) passes the waste material through a number of successive stages. The first stage (12) is a preparation stage and is followed by a second stage (14) in which calcium carbonate and calcium chloride are added. The third stage (16) is a boiler using heat generated by combustion. The fourth stage (18) is a multiple cyclone which separates dust and may recycle it to the second stage. Ammonia, ammonium hydroxide and urea may be added at the fifth stage (20). The sixth stage (22) is an economiser. Mercury concentration may be monitored (23) and the seventh stage (24) receives added calcium hydroxide or activated carbon. A fan (26) is followed by an eighth stage (28) to which calcium carbonate or calcium hydroxide and water are added. Dirty water and gypsum are removed and flue-gases pass up a chimney.
