The bar code symbols are produced directly from code generation of normal language characters represented in a 16 bit data code form The symbols have six bars and six spaces of various widths. The computer based system has the coded data characters selected and processed in a series of steps 110-118 to generate symbol code that is then subjected to a test routine 120. Size and format operations are carried out and the symbols printed.
