A method and apparatus for purifying a contaminant-containing gas by radiating ultraviolet rays and/or radioactive rays to a gas so as to break contaminants into very fine particles. The contaminants thus broken are then brought into contact with a photocatalyst. Next, to decompose the contaminants in contact with the photocatalyst, rays of light are applied to the photocatalyst. The photocatalyst can decompose organic compounds, organosilicon compounds, basic gases, etc. Even when these substances have a low concentration, they attain locally a high concentration because they are in the form of fine particles, and can be therefore removed.
|
